Glee Creator Ryan Murphy and Kings of Leon involved in Verbal Sparring Match!

You sit down on your couch and flip on your TV just in time, and it begins; the witty banter, the trials and tribulations of High School and... show tunes?  It must be none other then Fox's pop culture phenomenon, Glee that has appeared on your TV.  While watching the show it never really crossed my mind at how expensive it would be to put on a show using other people's music.  Maybe I'm just to busy singing along to realize that the song I'm singing along to realize it's costing the show and upwards of several thousand per song in order for me to have the joy of singing along!  Check out what the shows creator, Ryan Murphy had to say as well as his ongoing battle with Rock group Kings of Leon after the jump!

Recently, Murphy along with some of the shows stars (Jane LynchMatthew Morrison and Chris Colfer) and 20th Century Fox Television chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter and filled us in on the business side of the hit show.  Murphy commented,

“We went after ‘Lose Yourself,’ and it was jaw droppingly expensive. Around $200,000. We couldn’t do it because the episode would’ve been so over budget.”
Holy shit!  The fact that the show would even remotely consider that shows just what a juggernaut it has turned into.

Unfortunately, the article takes an ugly turn as Murphy lashed out about Kings of Leon refusing to let the show use their hit song "Use Somebody" a while back.  Murphy had this to say to the rough and rugged fam band hailing from the South,

“F— you, Kings of Leon. They’re self-centered a–holes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

The band responded to this by saying,

“This whole Glee thing is a shock to us. It’s gotten out of hand. At the time of the request, we hadn’t even see the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting ['Use Somebody']. This was never meant as a slap in the face to Glee or to music education or to fans of the show. We’re not sure where the anger is coming from.”
Oh but it doesn't stop there!  Kings of Leon's drummer, Nathan Followill had to throw in two two cents into the ring of this verbal sparring match via twitter

Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say fuck.
I have to agree with one commenter who added  "This whole thing sounds too much like a high school drama fest between 5th and 6th period."  What do you guys think??

  1. Damn on both fronts. Ryan Murphy needs to get off his podium and not pretend Glee is pushing arts education. No one I know who watches Glee was inspired to do something, it's a show that makes money. End.

But Kings of Leon is really going to go after a guy's sexuality? I like my rock & roll a little more anti-establishment and a less towel snapping.

  2. I get why Murphy was pissed, but there's nothing lamer than pretending you do Glee just for the kiddies out there.
